Understanding Two Common Visual Communication Tools

Although the terms signage and signboard are often used interchangeably, they are not exactly the same. Both play important roles in visual communication, but they differ in scope, usage, and purpose.

A signboard is a single physical display used to show specific information such as a business name, logo, direction, or message. Examples include shop name boards, hoardings, LED boards, and acrylic letter boards. Signboards are usually fixed in one place and serve a direct, straightforward purpose—mainly identification and visibility.

Signage, on the other hand, is a broader concept. It refers to a system or collection of visual signs used to guide, inform, warn, or promote. Signage can include signboards, wayfinding signs, safety signs, digital displays, banners, and informational graphics. It focuses not just on visibility, but also on communication, experience, and navigation.

In simple terms, a signboard is one type of signage, while signage is the overall strategy and system of visual communication. Businesses often use multiple signboards as part of a complete signage solution. For advertising and branding companies like SMILE, understanding this difference helps create more effective, organized, and impactful visual branding for clients.
